Plot
The film begins with a violent clash between student activists led by Michael Mukherjee (Ajay Devgn) and goons hired by politician Prosonjit Bhattacharya (Om Puri) on a bridge. Michael is shot by one of the goons, Lallan Singh (Abhishek Bachchan), who works for Prosonjit. Lallan then tries to escape in his car, but collides with another car driven by Arjun Balchandran (Vivek Oberoi), a carefree and wealthy youth who is on his way to the airport with his girlfriend Mira (Kareena Kapoor) to fly to the United States. The collision causes both cars to skid off the bridge and fall into the river.
The film then goes into a flashback mode, showing the lives of the three protagonists before the incident. Michael is a passionate and idealistic leader of a student movement that aims to bring social change in India. He is in love with Radhika (Esha Deol), a radio jockey who supports his cause. Lallan is a ruthless and ambitious criminal who works for Prosonjit and does his dirty work. He is married to Sashi (Rani Mukerji), a simple and loving woman who is unaware of his illegal activities. Arjun is a happy-go-lucky and spoiled son of a retired army officer (Anant Nag). He is in love with Mira, an aspiring writer who wants to settle in the US.
The film then returns to the present, showing how the accident affects the lives of the three men. Michael survives the gunshot wound and decides to contest the elections against Prosonjit with the support of his friends and Radhika. Lallan survives the car crash and is arrested by the police, but escapes with the help of Prosonjit. He then becomes obsessed with killing Michael and his associates, as he sees them as a threat to his boss and his own career. Arjun survives the car crash and realizes that he has been living a meaningless life. He decides to stay back in India and join Michael's movement, inspired by his courage and vision. He also breaks up with Mira, who leaves for the US without him.
